Removing Plastic Straws: Proof Is Making an Impact One Straw at a Time

Proof of the Pudding is proud to announce that we are joining the likes of Starbucks and Marriott in removing plastic straws from our partner venues and catered events. Recognizing the harmful environmental impact, our award-winning food service management and catering company is taking immediate action to completely phase out plastic straws from inventory.

Proof of the Pudding Cares About Our Planet

“We care about our planet and are committed to this company-wide initiative of phasing out all plastic straw use,” shares Proof of the Pudding’s President, Adam Noyes. “From our food service management at stadiums, airports, and conference centers, to our catered events, we believe that healthier oceanic marine life is possible through this elimination. Our hope is that, by working together, the hospitality industry can greatly reduce the amount of single-use plastics entering our nation’s oceans.”

500 Million

That’s how many plastic straws are used every day in the United States. According to strawlessocean.org, the majority of these straws end up in the ocean. How that happens is due to a variety of reasons, such as litter from boats, vehicles, and beaches.

The Impact

Reports indicate that an estimated 71 percent of seabirds and 30 percent of turtles have been found with plastic in their stomachs. This not only increases their mortality rate by 50 percent, but if action isn’t taken now, then studies show that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.

Environmental Responsibility

Companies and businesses nationwide are joining the ‘no plastic’ straw movement. Marriott International announced the removal of plastic straws from 6,500 of their hotels, while Starbucks announced a complete phase out by 2020 at their 28,000 stores worldwide. Perhaps the largest commitment is from Seattle, Washington. As of July 2018, Seattle is the largest metropolitan city to ban the single-use plastic straw. As pioneers in the hospitality industry, we are proud to be the first southeastern food service and catering company to lead this charge.
